Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade Honor Daughter Zaya While Accepting President’s Award at NAACP Awards 2023

Actress Gabrielle Union and retired NBA star Dwyane Wade gave an emotional speech while accepting the President’s Award at the 52nd NAACP Image Awards on March 27, 2021. The couple used their platform to honor their daughter Zaya Wade & celebrate her accomplishments.

Dwyane began the speech by speaking directly to Zaya stating “Zaya as your father all I’ve ever wanted is to get it right. And as I got older and I watched my daughter grow I had to Learn to let go & let you be you. I Stand here today proud to stand Up & say that I am proud of you & I am proud to be your dad”.

Gabrielle echoed Dwyanes sentiment adding “Every child in the LGBTQ+ community should feel safe should feel loved & should feel free to be exactly who they are.”

The couple has been open about their support for Zaya, who came out as transgender in 2020. They have been Vocal advocates for the LGBTQ+ community & have used their platform to speak out against discrimination.

In his speech, Dwyane emphasized the importance of parents supporting their children regardless of their identity. He stated “As parents we put our hopes & we put our fears on our kids. And with Zaya we decided to listen to her. She Is leading us on this journey. I’m thankful for her because she is allowing me to be her father and guide her in this journey.”
