‘The Worst Ones’ review: Limber questions the morality of street casting as French filmmaking satire scoops awards
Granted, the concept should be familiar to those who watched 2018’s animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which introduced the exciting possibility that virtually anyone could be Spidey. Rhys Ifans (The Lizard) and Thomas Haden Church (Sandman) reprise their roles. Meanwhile, to make things easier for Spider-Man to handle, they’re not remotely as intimidating as we remember them.
“No Way Home” keeps the suspense up to (and even through) the end credits, but perhaps most unexpected is Peter’s decision — along with girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and best buddy Ned (Jacob Batalon)-not defeat these villains to the way his predecessors did. Because, as Chris McKenna and Eric Somers’ screenplay tries to explain, this version of Peter is still dealing with Mysterio’s death. In response, we see the franchise trying to make the character more fully dimensional and, dare we say, “realistic” — much like the 21st-century Bonds of “Casino Royale” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” recognized in sparing the physical toll. The world had their respective heroes.
For my money, Holland was the least interesting of the three big screen Spider-Mans, coming across as younger and less mature than Maguire or Garfield. Until now. Whenever Doctor Strange appears in a Marvel movie, audiences should be prepared for some magical monkey business — the kind of rule-bending that makes basically anything possible. Superhero movies are only as good as their villains, and being reunited with Doc Ock and the Green Goblin is a thrill. While the other three villains were relatively disappointing in their original incarnations, this film focuses on the tragic dimensions of their characters and their redemptive powers.
It is not very successful in detecting Peter Parker’s anger building, whose good intentions lead directly to an irreversible damage. Conspirator J. From Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons), an unlikely constant across the multiverse — painting him as a menace, Spidey is torn between his instincts to help his adversaries and a darker passion for revenge (a watered-down Jedi-Sith tug-of-war version that we saw the heroes of “Star Wars”). While Holland seems like an eager Boy Scout to us who’d go rogue, that conflict serves as a promising setup for the movie’s obvious midpoint twist — one that the trailers have hidden, but the reviews should really unpack. If villains can make dimensional jumps, it stands to reason that other Spider-Men can too, and sure enough, first Garfield and then Maguire seem to be up-to-speed in Peter’s villain-infestation issue. Because they all face variations of the same challenges — from losing a loved one to balancing their romantic interests with a demanding day job — the movie balances light-hearted comedy with deeper life lessons. What could easily feel like one of those stiff Disneyland parades, where all the princesses are brought together to perform fan service, instead finds a strong emotional foundation.
Garfield is so good in this year’s “Tick, Tick … Boom! more radiates charisma more than he did in his two Spider-Man series. And the older and wiser Maguire, who mellowed and lethargic between his second and third Spider-Man movies, reminds viewers who haven’t seen him on screen in years why we found him so appealing in the first place. There’s something fundamentally troubling about dissolving the barriers between these separate iterations of the franchise, and yet, the entire creative team seems committed to treating the multiverse as a stunt or crass corporate move (it conveniently repairs a rift in the MCU), but Peter Parker As an opportunity to more fully explore what it means.

“No Way Home” doesn’t pretend the previous films were perfect, poking fun at elements we can all agree were weaknesses while leaving room for villains and Spider-Man alike to do some much-needed healing. The movie can be cheesy at times, and it’s too committed to setting up more hype to play off of upcoming Marvel products (they’re not stand-alone movies at all, so much as overloaded episodes), but it provides enough resolution to the Spider-Man adventures of the past two decades. Viewers tuned out along the way will be rewarded for giving it a shot.
